Synopsis

We are delighted to celebrate the 20th edition of the International Symposium on Occupational Safety and
Hygiene – SHO’2024. This year's event, held in a
hybrid format, reflects our commitment to
adaptability and inclusivity, ensuring that participants
can engage with the symposium regardless of global
challenges. The dedication of the Portuguese Society
for Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO) and
the unwavering support of our community have made
this possible.

This milestone marks two decades of our collective
efforts to advance the field of occupational safety and
hygiene, fostering collaboration, innovation, and
excellence. Since its inception, SHO has evolved into
a premier platform for experts, practitioners, and
enthusiasts worldwide to exchange knowledge, share
experiences, and discuss the latest developments in
our field.

As we commemorate this significant milestone, we
also pay tribute to the visionary leadership of Professor
A. Sérgio Miguel, the founder of SPOSHO and the
driving force behind the creation of this symposium.
His dedication and foresight have laid the foundation
for SHO's success and its role in shaping the discourse
on occupational safety and hygiene. Sadly, Professor
A. Sérgio Miguel passed away earlier this year, leaving
behind a lasting legacy of innovation and commitment
to advancing workplace safety. We honour his memory
and extend our deepest gratitude for his invaluable
contributions to our community.

The proceedings of the 20th edition of SHO encompass
a diverse array of topics reflecting contemporary
challenges and advancements in occupational safety
and hygiene. Key themes include the assessment and
mitigation of occupational risks, strategies for
enhancing workplace health and safety, and innovative
approaches to hazard identification and control.
Contributions also explore the intersection of
occupational health with broader public health
concerns, emphasising health promotion and disease
prevention among workers. Case studies, empirical
research, and theoretical discussions provide a
comprehensive overview of current practices and
future directions.

This year, we received an impressive 141 submissions,
with 135 accepted, reflecting an acceptance rate of
96%. The rigorous peer review process, involving 290
reviews by our International Scientific Committee
(ISC) consisting of 98 professionals from 13 countries,
ensures that accepted contributions uphold the highest
standards of scholarly inquiry and practical relevance.
The participation of 376 authors from 19 countries
underscores the symposium's global impact, bringing
together diverse perspectives and cutting-edge
research.

As customary, the papers will be published by
SPOSHO in the Symposium Proceedings book.
Additionally, selected papers have been included as
book chapters by Springer Nature for the fifth
consecutive year and indexed in SCOPUS.
Outstanding papers have the opportunity to be featured
in the International Journal of Occupational and
Environmental Safety (IJOOES), enhancing the
visibility of research presented at SHO.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants,
organisers, and supporters who have made SHO a
cornerstone of knowledge exchange and advancement
in our field. The extensive participation and
contributions from authors highlight our community's
vibrant and collaborative nature. We also acknowledge
the invaluable support from academic institutions,
professional organisations, and companies, including
the Brazilian Ergonomics Association (ABERGO),
Portuguese Authorities for Working Conditions (ACT),
the Association of Specialists in Prevention and
Occupational Health (AEPSAL), the Portuguese
Ergonomics Association (APERGO), the Portuguese
Association for Safety (APSEI), the Commercial
Association of Safety Engineers de Ljubljana (DVI
Ljubljana), the European Network of Professional
Safety and Health Organizations (ENSHPO), the
Hungarian Occupational Safety and Health Academy
(HOSHA), the Research Network on Working
Conditions (RICOT), Galician Society for the
Prevention of Occupational Risks (SGPRL), the
Portuguese Society of Labour Medicine (SPMT), the
Portuguese Acoustics Society (SPA).
Furthermore, we appreciate the support from various
media partners, including Proteger and the Segurança
magazine, for their contributions towards the extensive
dissemination of this significant event.

As we look back on the journey of SHO, we are
proud of the impact we have made and the progress
achieved. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all
speakers, participants, sponsors, and organisers who
have contributed to the success of this symposium
over the years.

Here's to celebrating 20 years of SHO and to many
more years of promoting safety, health, and well-being
in workplaces worldwide.
