Synopsis

We are delighted to welcome you to the 22nd edition of the International Symposium on Occupational Safety and Hygiene – SHO’2026.

Over more than two decades, SHO has consolidated its role as a distinguished forum for researchers,  professionals, practitioners, and students to share knowledge, discuss emerging challenges, and disseminate innovative approaches in the field of occupational safety and hygiene. The continued commitment of the Portuguese Society of Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO), together with the support of our academic and professional community, has enabled SHO to remain a dynamic and  internationally recognized platform for scientific exchange and collaboration.

As in previous editions, SHO’2026 brings together a diverse body of work reflecting the breadth and relevance of contemporary occupational safety and hygiene research. The contributions included in this year’s publications address a wide range of themes, including organisational and psychosocial risk factors, ergonomic analysis, occupational exposure assessment, occupational medicine, public health, safety culture, risk perception, accident prevention, digital and intelligent technologies applied to safety management, and sector-specific challenges across construction, healthcare, manufacturing, education, transport, and other occupational settings. Collectively, these works offer valuable empirical evidence, methodological advances, and practical insights to support safer, healthier, and more sustainable working environments.

The approved contributions for SHO’2026 comprise 14 abstracts, 41 proceedings papers, and 82 book chapter manuscripts, demonstrating once again the vitality and scope of the symposium. These publications reflect not only the scientific quality of the work submitted, but also the diversity of disciplinary perspectives and institutional contexts represented in this edition.

As in previous years, the accepted contributions will be published in the proceedings Book and the Abstracts Book of the Symposium by SPOSHO. In addition, selected manuscripts will be considered for publication as book chapters by Springer Nature, thereby extending the international visibility and academic impact of the work presented at SHO. Outstanding contributions may also be recommended for further dissemination through appropriate scientific publication channels.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all authors, reviewers, members of the International Scientific Committee, organising team, institutional partners, and supporters whose dedication made this edition possible. Their effort, rigour, and continued engagement are essential to maintaining the scientific quality and relevance of SHO.

We also pay tribute to the legacy of Professor A. Sérgio Miguel, visionary founder of SPOSHO, whose commitment to occupational safety and hygiene continues to inspire this symposium and the wider community it serves.

We trust that the works gathered in these volumes will contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge, the strengthening of professional practice, and the promotion of a preventive culture in workplaces and organisations.
