Occupational Exposure to Xylene in Hospital Workers - The Role of Occupational Medicine: O PAPEL DA MEDICINA NO TRABALHO
Synopsis
Xylene is a chemical found throughout various industries, including in the processing of histological samples in Pathological Anatomy, leading to occupational exposure among laboratory staff. Objectives: To compile the information and procedures required by an Occupational Health Service for
the assessment of workers potentially exposed to xylene in a hospital setting. Methodology: A literature review of scientific article databases, as well as a review of academic works and the relevant legal framework. Results: Xylene is a flammable chemical to which professionals involved in clearing and deparaffinisation are exposed. Acute exposure is associated with predominantly irritative symptoms affecting the eyes, oropharynx and skin. In the absence of specific tests for xylene with practical utility, the importance of clinical and symptomatic assessment is emphasised. Prevention strategies include substitution with safer agents, the use of personal protective equipment and strategies to minimise exposure. Conclusions: In the absence of substituting xylene with other reagents, the importance of occupational health surveillance of workers by Occupational Medicine is emphasised.
