Synopsis

Introduction: With the incidence of cancer on the rise, it becomes imperative to adopt comprehensive approaches that consider the physiological and psychosocial dimensions of the disease, emphasizing the therapeutic role of work in enhancing the overall well-being of individuals undergoing palliative treatment. Objectives: The primary objective is to shed light on the positive impact of employment on the lives of palliative cancer patients. Methods: A detailed case report of a 58-year-old male pediatrician diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma is presented. The patient underwent palliative chemotherapy and, after a year of treatment, chose to suspend aggressive chemotherapy with the goal of resuming work. The reintegration into the workforce was carefully guided by specific terms, including avoiding night work, limited consultation periods, and periodic reassessments by the occupational health physician. Conclusion: Challenges faced by cancer patients in balancing medical commitments and work demands are addressed. The impact of oncological fatigue on the return-to-work journey is explored, highlighting the need for supportive strategies in the workplace. The case study prompts a broader discussion on the potential benefits of occupational rehabilitation within the palliative care framework, challenging the conventional dichotomy between aggressive medical treatments and quality of life.
