Synopsis

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is an infectious respiratory tract disease caused by Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis), transmitted through respiratory droplets from an infected person. Neither prior infection nor vaccination provides permanent immunity, although the latter has dramatically reduced the incidence of the disease. Serological studies on healthcare professionals (HCPs) suggest that they may develop pertussis more frequently than expected in the general population.
