Synopsis

Occupational exposure of healthcare professionals to biological fluids can be responsible for the
transmission of hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. Potentially infectious biological fluids include blood, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial and amniotic fluids, semen, and vaginal secretions. Risk exposure is considered when there is contact with biological fluids through percutaneous exposure (cut or puncture wound), mucous membranes (ocular, nasal, oral), or non-intact skin to infected blood or organic fluids.
